Amelia burst into Lois’s room, she was so excited. Lois was reading a book, she was quite surprised to see her friend.

“Guess what?” Amelia said breathlessly.

“What?”

“Suave is taking me out for a private party on the night of my birthday. Please say you’ll come with us.”

“Huh?” Lois asked in surprise.

“I’ll tell him that I’ll bring a friend. Please don’t be a spoil sport.”

“Amelia! Get a grip on yourself! You don’t know this guy.”

“I do know him…besides, he’s like the only guy that has ever asked me out…”

Lois looked at her and sat up on her bed.

“Wait, are you saying that you’re going to date him because he’s the first guy that has ever taken notice of you?” She asked incredulously.

“Look at me! Just take a good look at me. Have you ever seen a girl this big at my age? I’m turning eighteen in a few days and I look like a hippotamus.”

“Huh? Who ever said that?”

“My mom, my dad, cousins, relatives, friends…etc…”

“You are a human being and a very beautiful one at that.” Lois said.

“Do you see the reason I like you and your folks? You guys treat me with respect and I feel loved…”

Lois got off her bed and stood before her friend and placing her hands on her shoulders, she said.

“You are beautiful…don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.”

“Do you see the reason I really love Suave? He tells me how beautiful I am.”

“You love him?” Lois gawked.

“Shh…don’t tell anyone but I think I’ve fallen for this guy.”

“Are you serious? Amelia!”

“Hey…don’t call my name like my mother does.”

“Listen to yourself! You sound so confused.”

“Look, are you coming with me and Suave on the night of my birthday or not?” Amelia asked.

“I don’t know…I guess I have to ask my parents first.”

“C’mon, don’t spoil the fun. Your parents would say no and somehow, my parents would hear about it.”

“Alright…”

“Really? Yay! Thank you!”

“I’ll think about it…” Lois sighed.

“Think about it? What’s there to think about? Come on friend…”

“I said I’ll think about it!” Lois said firmly.

Ashanti had never been scared in her whole life, for two days she’d watched her mother like a hawk. She loved the woman too much to bear seeing her suffer.

“Ash…” Her mother called weakly.

Ashanti’s head was on her mother’s hospital bed, she quickly looked up.

“Mom…”

“Have you been here long?” Her mother asked.

Ashanti nodded.

“Thanks baby…” Her mother said. “I don’t know what I’d have done without you. You are my greatest gift, do you know that?”

“Just concentrate on getting better…okay…” Ashanti said.

Her mother nodded and closed her eyes.

“Mom…can I ask you a question?”

Her mother opened her eyes.

“Where’s my dad? Can we maybe…contact him?”

Her mother looked surprised.

“I thought we’ve closed the subject of your dad. I told you before, he’s not a part of our lives.”

“But…but what if he’s rich…the hospital bills are high and…and…no one has the money to pay…”

“Don’t worry about the money, I’ll call some of my friends.”

“Do you mean the same friends who did this to you?” Ashanti said hotly.

“Ashanti!”

“Mom, I’m not a child…I know what you do to make ends meet but I don’t complain. I only get worried if you get hurt.”

“Let’s drop the subject please…”

“Your bills are high mom, we need help.”

“Like I said earlier, we’re going to ask my friends for help.” She said.

Ashanti nodded and got up from the chair beside the bed.

“Where are you going?” Her mother asked

“I’m just going to hang outside for the meantime…I’ll be back shortly.”

Her mother nodded and she left the room. As soon as she was outside the hospital, she made a phone call.

Lois walked into the sitting room and saw her parents staring at something in her father’s hands with worried expressions on their faces.

“Mom, dad…is everything alright?” She asked.

“Where’s…err…Amelia, is she still here?” Her mother asked shakily.

“Yes…she just left. What’s up? You both look like you’ve seen a ghost.” Lois said.

“Someone left…this at the gate…the security just brought it in for us…” Her father said.

Lois walked up to them and they showed her a photo she didn’t understand.

“What’s that?”

“It’s an ultrasound…dated fifteen years ago…errr…it has two babies….and…” Her mother said handing the picture to her.

Lois took the picture from her parents, they rarely ever hid things from her and that was the reason she was sure that they had no idea that she had a twin somewhere in the world. It made her feel so guilty about hiding the truth about Ashanti from them.

“What could this mean?” Her father asked, taking the picture away from Lois’s hands.

“Attached to the picture is a message, it reads, ‘I have something that belongs to you’.” Lois’s mother said shakily. “I don’t want to believe that someone is stalking us.”

Lois looked at her parents, the ultrasound photo struck a nerve, she knew what it meant. It confirmed her suspicions all along that Ashanti could be her twin but if she was, how come her parents knew nothing about it? She was more confused. Suddenly, her phone rang.

“Excuse me…” She said hurrying to the dinning to take the call. It was Ashanti.

“Hello…” Ashanti greeted.

“Ash…what’s up?”

“My mom is in the hospital.”

“Oh…I’m so sorry…”

“I don’t need your pity…I need money to pay for her medical bills and I need it now!”

“I don’t have that kind of money…whatever the sum is…”

“I am not asking you for the money, I know that your dad could be my father and he owes me a lot for abandoning our mother to fend for me on her own!” Ashanti spat.

“We’re not sure he’s your dad or that your mom gave birth to the two of us.”

“How do we explain the fact that I’m with her and you’re with…” Ashanti started.

“How do you expect to get money from him?” Lois asked, getting upset by Ashanti’s tone.

“How else? I guess it’s time that I showed myself to your folks!”

“What?” Was all Lois could say.
