“What in the world happened?” Nkiru’s husband asked me.
We were both at the police station as I had not fled Nkiru’s
car as I had hoped. I had sat inside the car instead as I felt it paid me
better to remain inside than to jump out and run off into nowhere as I had no idea of the environment.

“I nor know…Oga…dat ya wife ehn, na so I dey beg am…I
dey tell am make she nor fight but who sigh? She nor hear me ooo…she wan slap
me sef because I dey hold am…” I say.
“Are you serious? Nkiru is not like this? What changed her?
Who changed her?” Nkiru’s husband said to aloud.
As we were speaking, Stella rushed up to us.
“I rushed out of my house as soon as you called me. Why is Nkiru
at the police station?” Stella asked in shock.
“She went to beat up Oge’s mother and as it is, Oge’s mom is
hospitalized because she’s in some kind of shock.”
“Where is NK?” Stella asked.
“She’s writing a statement inside the station.”
“I hope she won’t be locked up…” Stella asked.
“I don’t know…I have spoken to the police officers and they said
that they are waiting for the D.P.O and that only him, has the final say
here…so…”
“Oh my God! What has gotten over her?” Stella asked.
“I nor know ooo…na so I dey hold am…” I say.
“Will you shut up? I won’t be surprised to know that you are
in on this!” Stella said to me.
“Me ke? God forbid say I go cause dis kain wahala…” I say,
snapping my fingers in disgust.
“Let me go back inside and see what’s happening…it’s
almost three o’clock and my kids are still in school….” Nkiru’s husband said
regrettably.
“Don’t worry, I picked them up and dropped them off at home
with my kids before coming here.”
“Thank you so much…I owe you one…” Nkiru’s husband said
and walked into the station.
“You will pay for this! I promise you! You are a witch!”
Stella said to me.
“Abeg go siddon…see as you dey talk wetin you nor know…”
I hiss.

Nkiru returned home that night after her husband’s long talk
with the D.P.O, as soon as she walked into the house, I greeted her and she
nodded numbly. I quickly did my chores and tiptoed to the door of the bedroom
she shared with her husband to hear the commotion within but I heard none. Sorely disappointed, I walked back to my room to sleep.
*********
I woke up the next day at eight thirty, I yawned and
stretched myself as I quickly got up from my bed to do my chores. It was
unusual for Nkiru not to wake me up when she did because that’s what she’s been
doing since I arrived at her house.
As I left the room I shared with her kids,
I made a mental note to tell her about my schooling and ask if she could help
me change schools, perhaps to a higher school of learning since the primary
school I attended was not for my age-range.

I had just stepped into the sitting room when I stopped dead
in my tracks.
Right there in the sitting room was Granny sipping a cup of tea
while Nkiru spoke to her. I turned and fled.
To be continued….
