I hurried to the door, Suzie was staring at her brother in-law, she seemed more confused than ever.
“Hey Suzie…I came to see you. Is it a crime to visit my sister-in-law?” He asked with a smile.
“To see me? But this is not my apartment.” She said to him.
“Oh…serious? This is not your apartment? If it’s not, what are you doing here?” He asked feigning innocence.
“This is my neighbour’s apartment. Cleopatra. You remember her, right? I brought her to your home the last time I was there.”
I walked into view. Enitan looked at me and said.
“Oooohh…hi…wow! I’m sorry, I’m sure I must have mixed up apartments.” He said.
“What’s the bottle of champagne doing in your hand?” Suzie asked, still not convinced after his long explanations.
“Oh…this?” He holds up the champagne bottle.
“It’s a gift for you. I need a quick favour but I would like to speak to you privately.” He said to Suzie.
Suzie turned to look at me and said.
“I’ll be back.”
As she left my house, I sat on my bed and for the first time in a long time, I prayed that Enitan doesn’t blow my cover. I was having a confidante for the first time in a long while and I loved the feeling of being with a friend who could sympathise with me. It will be disastrous if she finds out that I was once Enitan’s lover.
A few minutes later, Suzie walked into my mini apartment and held up the bottle of champagne from Enitan, as though she was holding up some sort of trophy.
“We’ve got something to drink!” She said in glee.
“Oh…cool.” I said.
“You should get that frown off your face. Life sucks but it must continue.” She said to me.
I nodded and sighed.
“What did he say to you?” I asked.
“Family stuff…he’s having a small spat with my sister and wants me to help plan a surprise for her. That’s the reason he visited.”
Suzie nodded and said to me.
“You see, my sister and I have been through a whole lot and Enitan has been a part of our lives since we were teenagers. My parents didn’t have so much but we knew what we wanted out of life. You see, my sister and I sold different stuff, from second hand clothes to shoes, in order to make ends meet at school. Enitan was never as rich as he is now. He just stumbled into wealth when his long-lost father died and gave him an inheritance. My sister is truly lucky, you know. That was how they moved from grass to grace.”
“Really, that’s a touching story.” I said.
“I know how much my sister loves Enitan and I know how much he loves her but then again, we know how ladies can get when they see a man with wealth. That’s why if I ever find out that he’s cheating on my sister, I swear that I’ll destroy all he holds dear and I’ll also hurt the woman badly.” She said with anger in her eyes.
“But…why the woman? Enitan should be the one to be…” I started.
“I don’t care who is to blame or not. I will tear that woman in shreds. She should know to check the ring finger of any man she’s dating…before getting herself involved.” Suzie said.
“Aren’t you the pot calling the kettle black? I know you date married men.” I said.
“I don’t date them, I only have flings with them.” Suzie corrected. “But if my married partner’s wife catches me in the act with her husband, then, I’ll know that I deserve whatever she’s going to do to me.”
“You have a very funny way of thinking.” I said, trying to lighten up the atmosphere.
She looked at me and said.
“My sister suspects that Enitan was seeing someone a few months ago. He was so careless to have withdrawn a large chunk of money from his account. What he doesn’t know is that my sister has her ways and she found out. When she asked him if he invested in any projects, he said no and when she asked if he bought anything expensive, he also said no. What that means is that, there was a woman and we’re going to find her out and deal with her.” Suzie said with firm resolve.
“Hey…calm down. What if the woman’s stopped seeing him?”
“I hope she has or else, we’re going to destroy her.” Suzie said.
I looked at Suzie in fear, I could see anger deep in her eyes.
“Do you know what? Let’s drop this subject…all this talk has got me kinda depressed.” I said.
“So, what do you propose we do?” She asked with a smile.
“Let’s go out for a stroll. I need fresh air.” I said quickly.
“I’ll go change my outfit.” She said to me with a smile.
As soon as she left, I picked up my phone and saw that I had many missed calls from Enitan and also a text message which read;
‘I’ll see you tonight by ten pm at the Rendezvous. I love you Cleopatra and nothing can stop me from being with you.’
I almost died of a panic attack.
To be continued….
