It was the hardest thing I’d ever done in my life; throwing my benefactor out of my bed. He glared at me, looking angrier than ever, his nostrils were flared and he squinted at me, I could tell that he was raving mad.

“Look, Enitan, I know that I might sound selfish but…but you are married and not just that, your sister in-law is my neighbour. I just got this place and I’d hate to jeopardise it.”

“What? I paid for this f**king place!” He swore.

I shivered as I stared at him. About three hours ago, I had faced his wife at the supermarket and that had felt like the longest seconds of my entire life. I could tell that she had an uneasy feeling about me. I could tell that she fully didn’t trust me. Thankfully, she hadn’t seen me speaking with Enitan as he’d just left before she’d come over to meet me but I could tell that she was being some sort of a stalker.

“Done with shopping?” She’d asked with a stiff smile on her face.

I had nodded and followed her to meet Suzzie who was so eager to take me to the fruits section.

Don’t you see that being with Enitan is bad news? Not only am I not attracted to him, I really don’t want his wife breathing down my neck.

When Enitan had knocked at my door hours after I was done shopping and had returned home, I’d thought it was Suzzie and I’d opened the door. I never expected to see his smiling face.

“You never told me that you were married.” I said, hoping that my excuse could make him understand my situation.

“How dare you tell me that? Am I the first married man to have a side chick?” He spat.

‘Side chick?’ I almost choked, I hated that word so much and now, he was referring to me in such terms.

“Look Enitan, I am sure that your wife must be worried about you…you…you need to leave.” I stammered.

He walked up to me and suddenly his countenance changed from chaotic to peaceful and a little bit of sulky.

“Darling, come on…how can you say that? Have you forgotten how much I spent, getting you this place? I wired a heavy sum into your account.” He said.

“Why are you acting like you were the only one who sacrificed something? I slept with you, have you forgotten?”

He threw his head back and laughed.

“Sex is cheap.” He said to me. “I can get it from whores or…”

“Mine is expensive.” I spat.

He looked at me and shook his head.

“You obviously don’t know what you’re in for right?” He asked me. “I can’t spend almost a million naira in securing you a place then you toss me out like a piece of broom.”

I didn’t speak.

“To hell with what my wife or anyone else thinks. This is not my first time and it’s definitely not my last.”

“I really don’t know what you’re still doing here after all my explanations, I really need you to leave.” I said.

He opened his mouth to speak but stopped when a knock was heard at my door. It was Suzzie.

“Hey neighbour…open up! It’s me…” She sang out.

I look at him with eyes wide and he also look alarmed.

“I’ll…I’ll hide in the bathroom.” He whispers.

He rushes into the bathroom and I make my way to the door. I open it to see Suzzie at my doorstep with Jenny.

“Jenny!” I said aloud, despite myself.

“Hey…I’m sure you’re wondering why I’m here.” Suzzie’s sister said apologetically.

“Errrm…I mean…it’s…quite surprising.” I said.

“Let’s come in jor…why are you holding the door close like that? Do you have a lover inside?” Suzzie teased.

It wasn’t far from the truth even though Enitan had ceased to be my lover.

“I…please come in.” I said opening the door wider. “What do I owe this pleasant surprise, Jenny?” I asked, calling her name out loud so that Enitan could hear from the bathroom.

“Well, I was in the area and I decided to pay my sister a visit plus I just wanted to chat with you for a bit.” She said.

“Can I use your toilet?” Suzzie asked quickly. “I really need to pee.”

“Oh, the flusher is not working…so it’s on lockdown.” I said, wondering where the lie came from.

“I guess I have to go to my place then…” Suzzie said hurrying out of my apartment.

As soon as she left, Jenny turned to look at me, I saw the smile disappear.

“I lied about being in the area.” She said.

“Excuse me…?” I stammered.

“I was wondering if you’ve met my husband before.”

“Me…? What? I mean…what?”

“Let’s stop the pretence. I know Enitan so well, we’ve been a couple since we were in high school. I know that prior to our meeting today, you guys must have known each other.”

“No, I have never met him before.” I said quickly.

“Well…I don’t know why I felt that you guys were acting strange around each other.” She said.

“Not at all, I wonder you got that idea from.” I said.

“Oh well…I guess it must have been my imagination…I should go.” She said turning to leave.

I gave her a stiff smile as I prayed with all my heart that she leaves my apartment.

She headed towards my door and just as she was about to leave the apartment, I heard a phone ring.

It was coming from the bathroom.
